22Declare that this is what the LORD says: The corpses of men will fall like dung upon the open field, like newly cut grain behind the reaper, with no one to gather it.2324But let him who boasts boast in this, that he understands and knows Me, that I am the LORD, who exercises loving devotion, justice and righteousness on the earthfor I delight in these things, declares the LORD.Berean Study BibleDownloadCross References1 Corinthians 1:31

Therefore, as it is written: Let him who boasts boast in the Lord.

More than that, I count all things as loss compared to the surpassing excellence of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whom I have lost all things. I consider them rubbish, that I may gain Christ

I want to know Christ and the power of His resurrection and the fellowship of His sufferings, being conformed to Him in His death,

Then Ben-hadad sent another message to Ahab: May the gods deal with me, and ever so severely, if enough dust remains of Samaria for each of my men to have a handful.

And the king of Israel replied, Tell him: The one putting on his armor should not boast like one taking it off.

If I have put my trust in gold or called pure gold my security,

if I have rejoiced in my great wealth because my hand had gained so much,

So do not claim, We have found wisdom; let God, not man, refute him.

They trust in their wealth and boast in great riches.

Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding;

No wisdom, no understanding, and no counsel can prevail against the LORD.

I saw something else under the sun: The race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong; neither is the bread to the wise, nor the wealth to the intelligent, nor the favor to the skillful; rather, time and chance happen to all.

Those who made Cush their hope and Egypt their boast will be dismayed and ashamed.

You were secure in your wickedness; you said, No one sees me. Your wisdom and knowledge led you astray; you told yourself, I am, and there is none besides me.

Because you trust in your works and treasures, you too will be captured, and Chemosh will go into exile with his priests and officials.

Why do you boast of your valleys, your valleys so fruitful, O faithless daughter? You trust in your riches and say, Who can come against me?

Behold, you are wiser than Daniel; no secret is hidden from you!

Escape will fail the swift, the strong will not prevail by his strength, and the mighty will not save his life.

Thus said the LORD, Let not the wise man glory in his wisdom, neither let the mighty man glory in his might, let not the rich man glory in his riches:

Ellicotts Commentary for English Readers(23)Let not the wise man glory in his wisdom.–The long prophecy of judgment had reached its climax. Now there comes the conclusion of the whole matter–that the one way of salvation is to renounce all reliance on the wisdom, greatness, wealth of the world, and to glory only in knowing Jehovah. The wise man is, as before inJeremiah 8:9, andJeremiah 9:12, the scribe, or recognised teacher of the people

Pulpit CommentaryVerses 23, 24.- These two verses were hardly composed for their present position, though a connection may, of course, be thought out for them. Perhaps a comparison ofHabakkuk 3:17, 18, may help us. There the prophet looks forward to a complete desolation resulting from the Chaldean invasion, and yet declares that he can even exult in his God. So here. All subjects of boasting have been proved untrustworthy; but one remains – not wisdom, not valor, not riches, but the knowledge of the revealed God.Matthew Henry Commentary9:23-26 In this world of sin and sorrow, ending soon in death and judgement, how foolish for men to glory in their knowledge, health, strength, riches, or in any thing which leaves them under the dominion of sin and the wrath of God! and of which an account must hereafter be rendered; it will but increase their misery. Those are the true Israel who worship God in the Spirit, rejoice in Christ Jesus, and have no confidence in the flesh. Let us prize the distinction which comes from God, and will last for ever. Let us seek it diligently.Jeremiah 9:23 CommentariesJump to PreviousJump to NextLinksJeremiah 9:23 NIV
